I'M ANGELA!

Now that we've gotten to know each other, let's dive into the good stuff!

Hi! I'm Angela—a photographer, huge travel lover, wife, and mom of 2 girls! I live in Linden Hills near the SW Minneapolis lakes with our family of four plus a tiny little goldendoodle, Bailey.

Before photography I was in the Marketing world at top Minneapolis corporations, then spent many years staying home with my little girls!

My style is bright, feminine, and effortlessly beautiful. I'm professional, yet laid back, and I love to make photography fun! People consistently tell me they love my photo sessions because I'm warm and genuine and they feel like they've known me for years!

in case we haven't met...

What to expect

Now that you are booked and things are officially official - let’s talk through the family photography experience, step-by-step! Your experience starts NOW, and I want you to know what’s around every corner as you begin to prep for your photo day!

01

Alongside this guide, you should have received a questionnaire to complete. This questionnaire will help me to get to know you and your family, your style and your preferences so that I can create the best possible photo experience for you! Please take the time to fill it out thoroughly after reading through this guide - the more info you give me, the more I can customize your experience and be sure your images reflect YOU! But, finish reading this guide first…there’s helpful stuff in here!

As we get closer to the day of your photo session, you can expect to hear from me with our meeting time, location and final check-in! If we chose an outdoor location, I photograph at “golden hour” - which is approximately 1.5 hours before sunset. We have likely already decided which time of day we will shoot! I like to wait until we are 1 week out from your shoot date to lock in an exact meeting time based on the time of the sunset and location we chose. If there are clouds or rain storms in the forecast, this also allows me to plan around the weather to ensure we get the best lighting possible!

If your family photos are in a studio, or in your home we will plan for a 10am start time.  This is typically when the light is best in studio.  If we are photographing in your home, we will discuss in detail which rooms of your home have the best light and determine final timing based on that.

your session day!

On the day of your session, know that it's normal to feel a little anxious!  Will my kids behave?  Will we get any keepers?  Trust me, this is completely normal and it happens to everyone.  Relax, get ready for a good time and leave the posing to me - it will be beautiful.

the week before

locations

Family photos are typically taken 1) Outdoors, 2) In a studio  3) In your home.  Each are equally beautiful and special (and mostly depends on the time of year!).  It's important to think about the vibe you'd like your photos to portray.  In the summer and fall months ~ Do you love the vibe of a MN lake?  Do you love the flowers in the spring and summer?  Perfect.  In the colder months ~ Do you like the clean, light-filled look of a studio, and don't want to deal with getting your home photo-ready?  Perfect, let's do it!  Do you like the idea of taking photos in the comfort of your own home?  Then that's perfect for you, as long as there's good light (we can discuss)!

Try to think of an overall “feel” or “vibe” for your shoot…and let this guide your location choices!

I have several posts on my Family Photography blog that give you an inside look at some real family photos sessions in a variety of locations around the Twin Cities area.  Take a look at these and see what resonates most with you!  And you don't need to make this decision on your own - I'm here to guide you!

LOCATION TYPES

Where we photograph your family matters—it sets the tone for your images.  You want to feel comfortable in the location you choose, and possibly choose a location that's meaningful to you.  Or maybe you just want something to vibe with the decor of your home?  Maybe you want extra space for your kids to run a bit.  The location is important!

studio

Studio family sessions are perfect if you love clean, timeless images with soft, beautiful light. I work with light-filled studios in Minnetonka, Minneapolis and Ramsey that are bright, airy, and neutral, creating an effortless, elegant backdrop for your photos. Studios are ideal if you want a polished look without worrying about weather, wind, or unpredictable light, and they offer a calm, comfortable environment where we can create a variety of stunning portraits with ease.  We know you can consistently get light-filled images that you'll love!

in your home

An in-home family session is deeply personal and meaningful.  Photographing you in your own space allows your images to feel genuine, emotional, and uniquely yours, capturing not just how you look, but how your family was naturally at this time in your life. With soft window light and familiar surroundings, your home becomes the perfect backdrop for images that feel warm, natural, and full of story.  If you do choose to photograph in your home, it's important that you have a room full of windows and natural light to capture the aesthetic of the photo style you see in my portfolio!

outdoors

Outdoor family sessions are beautiful when Minnesota weather cooperates, offering soft sunsets, open skies, gardens, and natural landscapes that feel romantic and effortless. I have a variety of favorite outdoor locations to choose from, and I’m always happy to help you find a spot that matches your vision—whether you’re drawn to something full of flowers, or sand to dip your toes in! If you’re unsure what fits your style, I’ll guide you toward a location that complements your vibe and the overall feeling you want your images to have.

what to expect during an in-home session

I love in-home sessions because they show you and your family in the place you spend all of your time!  It's where you play games together, eat breakfast together, watch movies....  If you opt for an in-home session it's important that your home has a lot of morning light, and has neutral decor.  I don't put a specific time limit on in-home family sessions - I will allow enough time to make sure we get a great variety of images but also keep kids patience and energy in mind. Sessions typically last from 30-60 minutes depending on number and ages of family members.

Choose one or two rooms in your home to un-clutter and style for your photos. Rooms with large South or East-facing windows are ideal. It could be the living room, entry area, kitchen, or even master bedroom. Dress up the spaces with simple, subtle touches like fresh flowers, meaningful heirlooms, or neutral decor. Light and bright is my signature style!

We'll typically start with some "smile at the camera" shots while everyone is fresh and ready.  But then I love to get the candid connection photos that are honestly my favorite, and typically are my clients' as well.

There are many benefits to a studio session! You don't need to clean up your home, you're guaranteed beautiful light-filled, clean elegant images.  However, they do require just a little more motivation and preparation to get you and your whole family dressed and out of the house.  I typically recommend not dressing your kids fully - maybe keep a layer off or even get fully dressed once you arrive at the studio.

I rent a studio for 60 minutes for family sessions.  This gives us plenty of time for getting dressed, getting settled, outfit changes (if desired).  If mom chooses an outfit or two from my client wardrobe I will bring them steamed and ready on photo day and you can get dressed when you arrive.  Most of the dresses in my wardrobe fit multiple sizes and I do bring safety pins just in case something is a little too big or too little - so I've never run into an issue of something not fitting.

We will start with some "smile at the camera" photos, then move on to candids, outfit changes, whatever we need to capture your family's genuine personalities.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A STUDIO SESSION

Outdoor sessions can be absolutely beautiful in Minnesota!  We are lucky to have so many beautiful locations across our state.  We’ll begin with a relaxed introduction so your children feel comfortable right away—no pressure, just a friendly connection to help them ease into the experience.  I don't put a specific time limit on outdoor family sessions - I will allow enough time to make sure we get a great variety of images but also keep kids patience and energy in mind.  Sessions typically last from 30-60 minutes depending on number and ages of family members.

While everyone is still fresh, we’ll start with a few classic, smiling-at-the-camera portraits. Then, we’ll gently shift into a more natural flow—playing simple games, moving, and letting your family interact in a way that feels genuine and unforced. This is where the magic really happens: laughter, connection, and the in-between moments you’ll treasure most.  I come prepared with a “bag of tricks” tailored to your children—their interests, personalities, and energy—so they stay engaged, happy, and having fun throughout our time together.

For the most comfortable experience, I recommend bringing easy-to-walk-in shoes, a light jacket (Minnesota weather can change quickly), and a small, non-chocolate snack for little ones if needed.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING an outdoor SESSION

Now for the most FUN part and hands-down the most frequently asked question: WHAT DO I WEAR!? Choosing what you will wear for your photoshoot is a huge decision but rest assured you don't have to make it alone!  First off - I have a Client Wardrobe full of dresses that look beautiful on camera, so if you find something you like BAM- you're done!  Additionally, I'm here to help style your session!  I will provide personalized outfit inspiration for your whole family, but here are some tips if you'd like to choose outfits on your own!

WHAT TO WEAR

1. SOFT, NEUTRAL TONES

Colors like cream, ivory, blush, sage, soft blue, and warm beige photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you. These tones feel timeless, flattering, and cohesive across studio, home, and outdoor settings.

2. say yes to a dress!

Dresses can really elevate the look of family photography sessions. Movement, gentle volume, and feminine silhouettes create that soft, romantic look that feels both natural and elevated.

3. Add texture, small pattern, and subtle detail

Lace, pleats, ruffles, off-the-shoulder necklines, and airy fabrics add depth without distraction. I always suggest choosing 1-2 family members to add in a small pattern to make your outfits really pop.

4. Use the client wardrobE!

outfit ideas & WHERE TO SHOP

Here are some spring/summer outfit ideas for you and your family based on the color palettes that I know photograph well.  Wondering where to shop to get the same or similar looks?

1. Busy patterns and bold graphics

Large logos, bold prints, and high-contrast patterns can pull attention away from your face and bump. Keeping things simple ensures your images feel timeless rather than trendy.

2. Overly bright or neon colors

Very bright tones can feel harsh on camera and may date your photos over time. Soft, muted colors always photograph more beautifully and consistently.

3. Stiff or uncomfortable outfits

Clothing that feels tight or restrictive can affect how relaxed you feel during your session. Comfort is key—when you feel good, it shows in every image.

4. Too many competing colors

If partners or children are included, coordinating everyone in a soft, neutral palette creates a cohesive, elevated look without feeling overly styled.

HOW TO PREPARE

PREPARING YOURSELF

Here are some tips when doing your own hair and makeup...

Don't forget the nails!

And one last tip!! Don’t forget to pamper your fingernails and toenails! Most of the time your hands do make it into the frame (squishing your kids cheeks for example), so make sure that your nails look just how you want! Try to avoid any chipped polish or crazy patterns. French manicures, light/natural colors and even nails with no color at all photograph best!! And if you're outside near a lake or dock, don't forget the toes!

  • The camera tends to make makeup disappear a bit.  Plan to wear slightly heavier eye make-up than normal - you can keep your skincare and facial makeup more natural, including blush and lipstick or gloss that are at least slightly darker than your lip color.
  • If you're one who curls your hair, keep it fresh and with movement.  You can even come to your shoot with your curls still set in place and we can get it just right when you arrive.
  • I do not recommend a spray tan as it can look orange and hard to edit naturally (especially if your family is all lighter!) but if you do decide to get a spray tan please keep it light and fresh.

HAIR & MAKEUP TIPS

Have Fun! get ready for laughs and snuggles

Let your kids help with their outfit selection (within reason!) - this helps them feel a little invested in the photo process and can make it more fun for them.  Before your session, grab a little bag with snacks (not chocolate!), water, and any small, neutral-colored toys that your child loves (just in case the toy ends up in your photos). Those may help to get their attention when it's time for them to look at the camera.

A lot of families discuss and choose something fun in advance as a treat or reward for a job well done, like an ice cream date or bowling adventure. They're little, and I know things don't always go as planned. Give them (and yourself!) lots of grace. I've seen it all and will make sure to deliver some beautiful photos, regardless of their moods. My goal is to make this as fun and stress-free as it possibly can be for you and your family!

I have a whole blog post about Family Photos with Toddlers - you can read it HERE.

PREPARING YOUR LITTLE ONES

AFTER YOUR SESSION

You’ll receive a fully edited gallery within 2-3 weeks. If you've chosen the Signature Collection you'll download your 25 favorites. If you've chosen the Heirloom Collection, your entire gallery and slideshow is yours.  You do have the opportunity to upgrade to the Heirloom Collection once you receive your gallery if that's something that interests you.

This step is completely optional, but it’s a premium service available to you.  Your online store will become available to you with your gallery!  You are granted print rights if you choose to print elsewhere, but the quality of prints are going to be visibly more premium than you will find at Shutterfly or your local Walgreens.

Pricing for Heirloom Framed Art begins at $575

These are very high quality wood or contemporary frames!  They are heirloom statement pieces designed to be handed down from one generation to the next.  They come in a variety of sizes and finishes.  I will custom design these for you and help you choose the right size and material for your space.  If you're interested in Heirloom Framed art let's discuss - I can bring some frame corners to your session.

Pricing for Fine Art Albums begins at $850

The heirloom albums are absolutely GORGEOUS. My favorites are the linen and velvet albums. The natural linen looks absolutely stunning on a coffee table.  I'm happy to custom-design for you!  If you're interested in heirloom albums I am happy to bring a sample to your session - just let me know.  Classic albums are very intuitively design by you directly in your gallery.
